Transferring the drawing to the plate
THE PRINT PROCESS
My photographs are translated to drawings in the sketchbook and then to the linoleum block. I sketch the image on to the linoleum with pencil followed by sharpie marker. The next step is to carve out the white spaces with lino carving tools. I print the linoleum block using a brayer to apply a thin layer of black oil-based ink on the surface. Printmaking paper goes on the top of the block. The transfer is made to the paper by running it through the printing press. Each image may require several proofs (carving and reprinting) to bring the print to completion. When I am satisfied with the print as a simple black and white image, I decide how to color each one uniquely. This is done by hand painting the print with watercolors and liquid inks. The Magpie prints are examples of those that remain as black and white prints.
